Planning a Fabulous Family Reunion (Part 2)

Will the family actually prioritize coming to our reunion despite the busy schedules? Mom or Grandma often has the stress of making the reunion sound exciting enough for people to want to come. What are ways to make this process less stressful and motivates the family to make it a priority?
The family wants to get together, so it shouldn’t be this hard to figure out. We all just want to enjoy being with each other. Below are some tips to get you started on this vision of a fabulous family reunion:

The way you market it to the family matters a lot. You could call it a family reunion, but that might sound boring. Instead you could title it something specific, similar to The Great Gutwein Gathering. The way you present your reunion to the rest of the family will make an impact.

Pay special attention to those who have specific needs and expectations. Make it a special time for them and consider what decisions need to be made in order for them to be able to come.

Being intentional about making memories is a key part of planning a good family reunion. It doesn’t have to be anything complex; brainstorming with your family can be part of the fun! Everything from having a special dessert (i.e. fondue or Grandma’s homemade cinnamon rolls) to a fun activity or tournament (i.e. pickleball or cornhole). Perhaps you have themed dress-up nights, or having a puzzle out in the living room. Don’t limit your reunion to only your ideas; invite the rest of your family in!

- Keep it casual: Let go of perfectionism and embrace a more relaxed atmosphere. The goal is for everyone to enjoy time together, not to have a picture-perfect event.
- Remember the purpose: Focus on connection and making memories rather than worrying about every detail being perfect.

Delegating responsibilities will help the family members feel like they are contributing and are a vital and crucial part of this. Ways to delegate include:
- Break the tasks into smaller parts like different meals, activities, location, and decorations.
- Let younger family members take over organizing activities or games. They can handle a lot of the logistics and create fun planned activities that become traditions.
- Each family or group can be in charge of something specific, like games, desserts, or clean-up.

We understand that planning a family reunion takes a lot of effort. It’s not easy finding something everyone likes. But, remember it is worth it because of all the memories that are created.
